The unincorporated community of Lakeside became a town site in 1886, and for decades received law enforcement services based out of the Santee Sheriff's Station. The Barona Band of Mission Indians, who have called the area home for thousands of years, continue to be valuable community partners and an important part of the rich culture of the Lakeside area which boasts four lakes, countless miles of hiking and equestrian trails, championship golf and the Barona resort and casino. Lakeside's rich equestrian history is evident in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's annual Lakeside Rodeo, and the Lakeside Western Days Parade. Lakeside's roots are firmly planted in the spirit of the "wild west."

The Lakeside Sheriff's Substation was opened in May 2015 to better serve the unincorporated community of Lakeside, portions of unincorporated El Cajon, the Barona Indian Reservation and the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District. The service area covers approximately 81 square miles with a resident population of nearly 80,000. The substation's 50 sworn personnel allow for proactive patrol operations, School Resource Deputies for El Capitan High School and the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, a Special Purpose Deputy assigned to the Barona Indian Reservation, Criminal Investigators, a four-deputy Crime Suppression Team and a full-time Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) clinician and deputy. Two Community Service Officers and professional support staff, aid in our sworn staff in connecting with and serving the public. Working closely with neighboring law enforcement agencies, the Lakeside and San Miguel Fire Departments and community groups, our mission is to reduce crime and the fear of crime through the use of Information-Led Policing and Community Policing, while serving the public with respect and professionalism.
