April 20, more commonly known as 4/20, is considered a "holiday" among marijuana users.

In California, the recreational and medicinal use of marijuana is legal.  However, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department wants to remind drivers it is illegal and dangerous to drive under the influence of marijuana.

Deputies will be conducting increased impaired driving patrols on Tuesday, April 20 from 2:30 p.m. until 1:00 a.m.

Studies have shown that THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, can slow reaction times and make it more difficult for drivers to judge distances and keep a steady position in their lane.

"Driving under the influence doesn't always mean alcohol," said Sheriff Bill Gore.  "Any substance that impairs, including marijuana, makes it unsafe to drive."

If you plan to participate in 4/20 activities and consume marijuana, designate a sober driver to take you home or stay at home.  Do not drive and never ride with an impaired driver.
