A man is in custody after an hours-long standoff in the East County.
On Thursday, July 24, around noon, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force (FTF) located wanted felony suspect Joseph Gonsalves (DOB 06/12/1976) at a home in the 900 block of Silverbrook Drive in unincorporated El Cajon. Gonsalves had an outstanding warrant for felony domestic violence. He was also wanted in connection with an ongoing investigation being conducted by detectives from the Alpine Sheriff's Station.
The FTF coordinated with Sheriff's Detectives in obtaining a search warrant for the home. Due to the high-risk nature of the situation, the Sheriff's Special Enforcement Detail (SED/SWAT) was called in to serve the warrant.
SED/SWAT Deputies attempted to contact Gonsalves just before 6:00 p.m. He ignored all lawful commands to surrender and then barricaded himself inside the home along with a woman. Both Gonsalves and the woman remained in the house for hours and refused to speak with deputies.
Gonsalves yelled several threats from the home, including threatening to kill deputies if they entered.
Not knowing if the woman was willingly staying inside the home or being held against her will, deputies attempted to send a drone inside the home. Gonsalves attacked the drone and rendered it inoperable. Deputies introduced chemical agents inside the home in order to get Gonsalves and the woman to leave. Eventually, the woman exited the home.
After speaking with deputies, it was determined the woman was not being held against her will and was not the victim of a crime. She was treated for chemical exposure at the scene and released.
Gonsalves continued to refuse to leave the home. Several more attempts were made to deescalate the situation and have Gonsalves exit the home peacefully. He refuesed to comply.
Around midnight, SED/SWAT Deputies along with a Sheriff's K-9 made their way into the home to take Gonsalves into custody. No deputies were hurt. Gonsalves was taken to a hospital for treatment related to injuries sustained during the standoff.
Gonsalves was charged with felony domestic violence, criminal threats toward a public officer and felony vandalism. Further charges may be added once the investigation is completed.

Sospechoso de delito grave bajo custodia.
Un hombre se encuentra bajo custodia tras un enfrentamiento de varias horas en el Este del Condado.
El Jueves 24 de Julio, alrededor del mediodía, el Grupo de Trabajo Contra Fugitivos del Servicio de Marshals de Estados Unidos (FTF, por sus siglas en inglés) localizó al sospechoso de un delito grave, Joseph Gonsalves (fecha de nacimiento: 06/12/1976), en una vivienda ubicada en la cuadra 900 de Silverbrook Drive, en la zona no incorporada de El Cajón. Gonsalves tenía una orden de arresto pendiente por un delito grave de violencia doméstica. También era buscado en relación con una investigación en curso a cargo de detectives de la Estación del Alguacil de Alpine.
El FTF se coordinó con los detectives del Alguacil para obtener una orden de allanamiento para la vivienda. Debido al alto riesgo de la situación, se llamó al Detalle de Aplicación Especial del Alguacil (SED/SWAT, por sus siglas en inglés) para entregar la orden.
Los oficiales del SED/SWAT intentaron contactar a Gonsalves poco antes de las 6:00 p.m. Ignoró todas las órdenes legales de entregarse y se atrincheró dentro de la casa junto con una mujer. Tanto Gonsalves como la mujer permanecieron en la casa durante horas y se negaron a hablar con los oficiales.
Gonsalves gritó varias amenazas desde la casa, incluyendo la de matar a los oficiales si entraban.
Sin saber si la mujer permanecía voluntariamente dentro de la casa o si estaba retenida contra su voluntad, los oficiales intentaron enviar un dron al interior. Gonsalves atacó el dron y lo inutilizó. Los oficiales introdujeron agentes químicos dentro de la casa para obligarlos a salir. Finalmente, la mujer salió.
Tras hablar con los oficiales, se determinó que la mujer no estaba retenida contra su voluntad ni era víctima de un delito. Recibió tratamiento por exposición química en el lugar de los hechos y fue dada de alta.
Gonsalves continuó negándose a salir de la casa. Se hicieron varios intentos para calmar la situación y lograr que Gonsalves saliera pacíficamente. Se negó a obedecer. Alrededor de la medianoche, oficiales del SED/SWAT, junto con un perro policía del Alguacil, ingresaron a la vivienda para detener a Gonsalves. Ningún oficial resultó herido. Gonsalves fue trasladado a un hospital para recibir tratamiento por las lesiones sufridas durante el enfrentamiento.
Gonsalves fue acusado de violencia doméstica grave, amenazas criminales contra un funcionario público y vandalismo grave. Es posible que se le imputen más cargos una vez finalizada la investigación.
