On January 1st, 2026, at about 8:10 a.m., deputies from the San Marcos Sheriff's Station were dispatched to a water emergency near Lake Hodges in unincorporated Escondido. A man reported that he and his wife had been out for a walk near the lake. The couple entered the lake grounds at a low-water crossing near the roadway. About an hour later the couple returned to the same crossing and found the rains had flooded the area. Water on the crossing was now flowing swiftly to the lake. The couple entered the flowing water on foot to get back to their vehicle. Despite walking cautiously, the current swept them both off their feet. They were carried by the water into a creek that flowed into Lake Hodges.
After struggling with the current, the male successfully reached shore, but his wife continued downstream. The man was able to walk to a residence, where he was assisted in contacting the San Diego Sheriff's Office for help. Deputies and fire personnel from Cal Fire, and local Fire agencies responded to the area and a rescue operation was launched.
A short time later a San Diego Fire Rescue Helicopter located the female. The female was rescued and transported to the hospital. The couple was reunited, and both are in stable condition.
With continuing rains forecasted in our region for the next several days, the San Diego Sheriff's Office is urging the public to never walk, swim, or drive through flooded areas and use caution when entering an area prone to flooding. Just six inches of fast-moving water is enough to put your life at risk. Remember, turn around, don't drown.

Rescate acuático en el lago Hodges
Pareja casi abrumada por el agua de la inundación
El 1 de enero de 2026, alrededor de las 8:10 a.m., agentes de la comisaría del sheriff de San Marcos fueron enviados a una emergencia de agua cerca del lago Hodges, en la zona no incorporada de Escondido. Un hombre informó que él y su esposa habían salido a pasear cerca del lago. La pareja entró en los terrenos del lago por un paso de aguas bajas cerca de la carretera. Aproximadamente una hora después, la pareja regresó al mismo paso y encontró que las lluvias habían inundado la zona. El agua del cruce fluía ahora rápidamente hacia el lago. La pareja entró en el agua corriente a pie para volver a su vehículo. A pesar de caminar con cautela, la corriente los arrastró a ambos por el suelo. Fueron arrastrados por el agua hacia un arroyo que desembocaba en el lago Hodges.
Tras luchar contra la corriente, el macho logró llegar a la orilla, pero su esposa continuó río abajo. El hombre pudo caminar hasta una residencia, donde fue ayudado a contactar con la Oficina del Sheriff de San Diego para pedir ayuda. Agentes y bomberos de Cal Fire, así como agencias locales de bomberos, respondieron a la zona y se lanzó una operación de rescate.
Poco después, un helicóptero de rescate de incendios de San Diego localizó a la mujer. La mujer fue rescatada y trasladada al hospital. La pareja se reunió y ambos están en estado estable.
Con la previsión de lluvias continuas en nuestra región durante los próximos días, la Oficina del Sheriff de San Diego insta al público a no caminar, nadar ni conducir por zonas inundadas y a que tenga precaución al entrar en una zona propensa a inundaciones. Solo seis pulgadas de agua rápida son suficientes para poner tu vida en peligro. Recuerda, date la vuelta, no te ahogues.
