Greg Rylaarsdam is a Commander with the San Diego Sheriff's Department and is assigned to the Human Resources Bureau. He is a 32-year veteran of San Diego County law enforcement and was promoted to the rank of Commander in 2021.
Born in Denver, Colorado and raised in San Diego County, he began his law enforcement career in September 1989 with the San Diego County Marshal's Office. During that time, he served in several positions including court security, uniformed field services, military liaison, training, the plainclothes felony warrant detail, as well as the security response team where he responded to and investigated judicial threats.
In January of 2000, the Marshal's Office merged with the Sheriff's Department. Greg worked in the newly created Court Services Bureau before transferring to the Ramona Patrol Station in 2003. He spent nearly four years in various patrol assignments, including uniformed patrol, training officer, corporal, and training coordinator. In 2006, he was selected to work at the Regional Law Enforcement Academy as a corporal at the Sheriff's In-Service Training Unit. While there, he was responsible for the development and delivery of training to staff in several areas including firearms, less-lethal systems, tactical communications, TASER, Force Options, Supervising Critical Incidents, DUI enforcement, drug intoxication and evaluation, and National Incident Management System
He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in November of 2007, and worked in several assignments including the Court Services Bureau, Patrol in Poway, Ramona, and Valley Center, before moving to Sheriff's Personnel where he was responsible as the front-line supervisor for the department's recruiting and hiring effort.
After promoting to Lieutenant in November of 2014, Greg worked in Law Enforcement Support, where he oversaw the department's Sheriff's Analysis Driven Law Enforcement Unit and information-led policing effort. In October 2015, he moved to the Major Crimes Detail where he led the department's Financial Crimes and Elder Abuse Units, as well as Sheriff's personnel assigned to the FBI CYBER Task Force, Computer and Technology Crime High-Tech Response Team (CATCH), and Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC). While in Major Crimes, Captain Rylaarsdam also spent significant time leading the Family Protection and Sheriff's Homicide Units. In November 2017, he transferred to the Vista Patrol Station where he served as the administrative lieutenant. In these roles, he oversaw patrol, training, the Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving Unit, the Gang Enforcement Team, Crime Analysis and Prevention, and Area Detectives.
In March of 2018, he was transferred to command the Sheriff's Rural Law Enforcement Detail where he was responsible for the law enforcement effort for an area of over 2800 square miles, four substations, and eight Indian Reservations.
After his promotion to Captain in June of 2018, he returned to the Vista Patrol Station, where he was in essence the "Chief of Police" for the city of Vista and the surrounding unincorporated areas of Fallbrook, Bonsall, Rainbow, and De Luz. In 2020, Greg returned to the Human Resources Bureau to oversee the Department's training units and the Medical Liaison/Risk Management Unit.
In 2021, Greg promoted to Commander and remains in the Human Resources Bureau where he oversees Internal Affairs, Medical Liaison Unit, Risk Management, Personnel, and Training.
