Karen began her career with the Sheriff's Office in January 2003 and graduated from the 55th Regional Academy. As a deputy, she worked a variety of assignments including San Diego Courts & Field, San Marcos Patrol, San Marcos COPPS, North Coastal Area detective, Child Abuse and Homicide detective in the major crimes division.
In 2017, Karen promoted to sergeant, and worked at the San Diego Courthouse, Poway and 4S Patrol stations, Rancho San Diego area investigations sergeant and Child Abuse and Sexual Assault investigations sergeant.
After promoting to Lieutenant in March 2022, Karen was assigned to the Detention Investigations Unit and to the North Coastal Station. She also served as a Family Liaison Officer. As a Captain, Karen oversaw the Narcotics and Gang Division.
In May 2025, Karen promoted to the rank of Commander and is currently assigned to Law Enforcement Services Bureau Support Division. Her responsibilities include the Emergency Services Division, Communications Center, Property & Evidence, Licensing, CPRA, and the Crime Laboratory.
Karen holds a Master of Science in Criminal Justice and Criminology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She is also a graduate of the POST Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute and the San Diego Regional Leadership Institute. Karen is a proud native San Diegan and lives here with her husband and children.
