What is SafeStreets

SafeStreets is a collaboration between the community, businesses, San Diego County Communities, and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office that allows law enforcement to address community safety matters in real time.

Built on a foundation of technology that reinforces community policing, SafeStreets allows members of the community to participant and work towards enhancing the community’s quality of life by sharing home security video feeds directly with the Sheriff’s Office.

By using Security cameras, and sharing pre-authorized content with the Sheriff's Office, you can help not only deter crime but assist in investigation should a crime take place.

Quicker response and investigative leads
Sheriff's Office can quickly respond to calls for service, suspicious activity, and administer investigative reports.

Efficiency with information sharing
By quickly sharing video recordings, rather than having to wait several hours or days to transfer or grant access to video content, you allow for the quick distribution of information to help assist with an investigation.

What are Safe Streets Cameras?

Safe Streets Cameras are public safety tools installed and monitored by the Sheriff’s Office to help enhance community security. These cameras are equipped with recording capability and are not actively monitored.

What are ALPRs (Automated License Plate Readers)?

Automated License Plate Readers, or ALPRs, are specialized cameras used by the Sheriff’s Office that not only record video, but also have the ability to read and capture license plate information from passing vehicles.

These devices automatically compare license plates against law enforcement databases to help identify vehicles that may be connected to ongoing investigations, such as those reported stolen or linked to suspected criminal activity.

ALPRs are valuable tools in locating wanted suspects, recovering stolen vehicles, and supporting public safety efforts.

How to Participate

You can participate in SafeStreets by participating as a registered user or exclusive user by clicking here.

1) Home users consist of residential or commercial users who have existing security cameras and choose to register with SafeStreets. The registry will help the Sheriff's Office identify your particular location as having cameras that we can ask for content from should the need arise. There is no cost to become a Registered user. If you wish to become a registered user, click on the SafeStreet location links below.

2) Exclusive Users (business, commercial, schools, and other governmental agencies) utilize a compatible camera system that is federated with the Sheriff's Office that would allow an authorized Sheriff's representative direct access to your live video content. Depending on your current security system, there may be costs associated with being an Exclusive User.

Once a representative gets in contact with you, they will meet with you to perform a site survey and further advise you on options for building a partnership with SafeStreets.
