Inspiring Youth in STEM Through Hands-On Experiences

The Sheriff’s Regional Crime Laboratory is at the forefront of integrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) into real-world law enforcement. Since 2022, the Sheriff's Office has hosted a series of STEM events aimed at inspiring youth to explore careers in STEM and law enforcement.

These events provide young participants with immersive, hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and passion for these fields. Participants gain direct exposure to forensic science, crime scene investigations, and law enforcement technologies, providing them with a deeper understanding of how STEM skills are applied in the world of criminal justice.

National Forensic Science Week

One of the highlight events is National Forensic Science Week, held each September, when the Crime Lab opens its doors to youth. During this week, participants engage in crime-solving activities such as:

  • Guided tours of the Crime Lab, showcasing forensic science practices, fingerprinting, and crime scene investigations.
  • Themed crime scenes staged within the lab, where youth role-play as detectives and solve complex cases using forensic experiments and evidence tests.
  • Direct interaction with forensic experts, including professionals in print and document examination and law enforcement investigations.
  • Ask the Expert sessions or panels where participants can engage with professionals in forensic science and law enforcement, gaining insight into their careers.

These partnerships also help sustain engagement, as social media continues to amplify the reach of these events, with participants returning for future opportunities. One attendee shared that her experience at the event inspired her to pursue a career in physical science and forensic science, demonstrating the lasting impact of these programs on young participants’ futures.

The Sheriff’s Crime Lab program is proud to provide these educational opportunities and help shape the next generation of STEM and law enforcement professionals.
