SEC. 21.307. TAXICAB DRIVER'S IDENTIFICATION CARD - REQUIREMENTS AND ADDITIONAL GROUNDS FOR DENIAL.

(b) To be eligible for a taxicab driver's identification card a person must be at least 18 years of age...

Sheriff Licensing processes taxi and paratransit drivers permits on a walk-in basis (no appointment) Tuesdays and Wednesdays, between 8:00-11:00am and 1:00-3:00pm.  Also, by appointment only on Thursday mornings 8:00-11:00am.

We are closed weekends and holidays.

Taxi drivers cannot operate a taxicab while their taxi permit is expired. 

Drivers may come in to renew their permit up to 30 days before the permit expires.  

If the permit is expired by more than 60 days, the driver must reapply and pay the full fee again (same as a new driver), which includes being relivescanned.

Initial and Reapplying Drivers:

• Application
• Hire slip
• Business Tax Certficate if picking up passengers in the City of San Diego. 
• A drug test and alcohol test must be done and we must already have received the results directly from the lab. 
• A photo will be taken and livescan will be done, as well as, a preliminary background check.

Renewing Drivers:

• Hire slip
• Business Tax Certificate
• Drug and Alcohol test results must already be here
• Also, bring in your current taxi permit and ID card so we can replace them

Drivers must present a hire slip filled out properly and signed/dated within 7 days by the hiring company. 

A taxi permit can have up to four companies listed.
